The Word on the Street: Rug Hooking with Graham Hollick

$300.00

Saturday July 11 & Sunday July 12
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Instructor: Graham Hollick

Materials Fee: $80 (paid directly to the Instructor)
Students: 10

In this two day, hands-on workshop you will be introduced to the art of rug hooking with visual inspiration from street art. Graham will demonstrate the processes involved in making your own hand-hooked rugs, from stripping up used garments or waste fabrics, to the technique of hooking through a burlap backing to make your own 9” x 9” piece that can be used as a wall hanging or cushion cover.

On the first day, Graham will give a short talk about his work including recent samples. He will guide participants through the necessary steps to come up with your own design: how to transpose that onto the hessian backing; how to think about and choose colours; how to cut fabrics with a cutting wheel and how to hook them through the hessian backing so you can work on your individual piece.

On the second day, you will continue working on your own piece with support from the instructor, with a focus on combining and experimenting with different fabrics. Graham will also explain how to finish and back your piece. The day will end up with an informal discussion on the work produced by the group.

Participants should bring printouts of inspiring phrases or words that they have found in street art to be used as design inspiration for the hooked artworks.

A hand-out will be provided with helpful tips on the technique and addresses for supplies.

Students to bring: rotary cutter, fabric scissors, paper scissors, quilters ruler.

Graham Hollicks’ textiles use the age-old skill of rug hooking. His imagery draws on multiple inspirations from street art to ritualistic masks, to found graphics and landscapes, often leading the viewer to reflect on the human condition. They are made entirely using materials converted from used garments and textiles.
