Hand-Knotting from Tiling Notations

$134.00

Sunday September 14
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Instructor: Nithikul Nimkulrat

Materials Fee: $20 (paid directly to the Instructor)
Students: 8

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use paper string to create knotted work that follows two-tone knotted patterns in the knot library that Nithikul Nimkulrat has developed in collaboration with mathematicians by using mathematical notation methods.

In the morning, after warming up with tying reef knots and getting to know how to read a tiling notation, the participants will select patterns from the knot library to knot. In the afternoon, participants will continue with their chosen patterns to create a three-dimensional form,or continue to try new patterns from the library.

This workshop will include a visit to Nithkul’s exhibition “Rembered & Forgotten” at Craft Ontario’s new space in the same building as our studio.

This workshop is meant for people who love working with their hands and have done some forms of craft, not particularly textiles.

For the knot library, see https://museum.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/zaxdzs6286/files/TMJ49_Nimkulrat_Tables.pdf

Please bring: scissors, a ruler, masking tape, a pen/pencil, and a notebook
