Dyeing Philippine Textiles: The Colour of Filipno Food

$134.00

Saturday March 28 / Saturday May 2
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Instructor: Timothy Manalo

Materials Fee: $40 (paid directly to Instructor)
Students: 12

In this workshop, we dive into the world of natural dyeing using food waste and spices commonly found in home-cooked Filipino dishes. Using ingredients sourced from local Asian grocery stores such as bay leaves, tamarind, annatto pepper, safflower, and yam, participants will explore varieties of pinks, reds, browns, greens, yellows, and, of course, purple!

Participants will learn how to make their own dye vats, extract color from the food materials, and use mordanting processes to achieve vibrant and lasting colours. The workshop will also include resist dyeing techniques and eco-printing on blank garments and fabric samples.
