Colour Collection: Natural Dyeing

In this 2-day workshop you will learn how to create a beautiful collection of colour from both local and exotic natural dye sources. Learn how to prepare fibres - cotton, linen, wool and silk stitch-weight yarns; wool and cellulose fabrics - with tannins and mordants.

Create multiple dye vats and learn dye processes for different colours. Explore how to broaden colour palettes through overdyeing and deepening tones with iron, to create a full range of dyed samples.

All dye materials, yarns, fabrics, raw fleece, and chemicals are included in the course fee. Students are asked to bring a 3 ring binder, pen, pencil and a fine tipped permanent marker.

Thea Haines is a Professor and the Studio Head of Textiles in the Craft & Design Program at Sheridan College. She is a graduate of McMaster University (2003, BA Hons Comparative Literature and Studio Art), and Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design (2006, Textiles), Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (2012, MA Textiles Design), and a former artist-in residence of the Craft Studios at Harbourfront Centre (2006-2009). She has been teaching in the Bachelor of Craft & Design program at Sheridan College since 2007. Thea is a specialist in repeat pattern design, textile printing, and colour with a focus in sustainable practices and natural dyes. She has been a colour consultant and dye techniques educator for designers and makers in craft, fashion, theatre, and the film and television industry. Previous projects include community dye gardens, a regional survey of dye plants in Hamilton, and a study of colours produced from food waste. She was the co-curator, along with Rachel Machenry, of the exhibition Chromatic Geography, at Craft Ontario, in 2017.

Gitte Hansen is a currently full time studio member, rejoining after a successful career in post secondary education. She holds an MDes from Northumbria University, UK and an under grad in textile design from Kolding Design School in Denmark. Gitte was one of the founding members of the Contemporary Textile Studio and has rejoined to pursue her sustainable design practice in printing, dyeing and stitching.
