Bobbin Lace 101

$93.00
sold out

December 2
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Instructor: Padina Bondar

Materials Fee: $20
Maximum Students: 10

This workshop will simplify one of the most intricate and exclusive textile-making techniques. Bobbin lace held a high place in society for centuries, losing the spotlight when industrialization provided more efficient ways of creating lace. However, over the past few years, it is again gaining popularity and appreciation as a highly valued handcraft. Despite looking intimidating, learning to bobbin lace can be a fun and rewarding process with a low barrier to entry, easily getting started with improvised tools found in most households. Throughout this workshop, attendees will learn the basics of bobbin lace, how to set up a basic workstation, and various beginner stitches.

Padina Bondar is an award-winning designer, artist, and all-around maker with extensive production, research, and technical abilities in textiles, fashion, and sustainability. Padina Padina is best known for her avant-garde creations using alternative materials and integrating traditional craft and modern-day technology. Her mission is to deliver meaningful outcomes to projects & problems across the design spectrum with intersectionality, justice, equality, sustainability, and ethics at the forefront of her narrative. Spinning yarn, making lace, developing proprietary tools, and turning trash into treasure in her process.

Born in Tehran, raised in Toronto, and now living in NYC, her passion and perspective are the results of cultural juxtapositions that inspire a closer look at social and cultural norms and how contrasting concepts can intersect to create new ideals. Padina’s mission is to deliver meaningful outcomes to projects & problems across the design spectrum with intersectionality, justice, equality, sustainability, and ethics at the forefront of her narrative.

Padina is best known for her outrageous topics and presentation focused on waste management and couture creations to challenge and change existing systems that cause the fashion industry to be a leading environmental pollutant. She aims to shed light on the mountain of waste and injustice beneath the glamorous facade of the industry. Her calling is to uncover the common ground and positively impact the narrative in an engaging, relatable, and inclusive way.
