TEACHING IN OUR STUDIO
Teaching Fees
We offer CARFAC rates for teaching for Guest Instructors, which are currently $750.00 for a day (10:00 am - 4:00 pm) per Instructor. In order for a workshop to run, we need to have these fees covered by registration. The majority of our single day workshops run at a fee of $134.00 per person and two-day workshops are $268.00 per person. You can use these numbers to determine the minimum number of participants needed for the workshop to run.
In some cases, if registration is low, we may offer you the option of running the workshop at a reduced rate (whatever is collected from registration minus a 25% levy fee). It is entirely up to you if you decide to do this and can be useful if it’s the first time a workshop is running and it might be useful for you to gain experience and gather images for future promotion.
If you are a Member, it is at your discretion whether you run a workshop (or not). The fees you receive are based on the number of people registered minus the 25% levy fee. The workshop rate to use for this calculation is $130.00 for a one-day workshop or $260.00 for a two-day workshop (we charge a bit extra to recover e-commerce processing fees).
Example if you have 6 students: 6 x $130 = $780.00 - $195.00 = $585.00
Note: your levy fee is capped at $200.00 so if you’re levy fee at 25% exceeds that, you will only reduce your fee by $200.00.
We pay teaching fees via e-transfer and require an invoice in order to submit payment. We endeavour to send fees promptly after receiving your invoice.
Material Fees
Material fees are set by you and based on what you will be providing to each student. This number generally varies from $20 - $50 and these fees are paid to you directly by your students. This allows us to avoid complicated HST requirements, which would include collecting receipts from Instructors etc. You can provide a kit, shared materials, or a combination of both. We have some shared tools available in this studio and you can also request that students bring certain tools with them.
Students will be reminded of the material fees in the email we send out roughly one week before the workshop but you should remind them when you’re in the class. If you don’t receive all your fees before the workshop is completed, please reach out to our Studio Coordinator and they will email a request on your behalf.
Workshop Description & Details
You can take a look at our website to get an idea of length, formatting, and general tone for our workshop descriptions. Our Programming Committee may offer feedback or edits to what you submit but for the most part it is up to you how you describe your offering. If you need assistance with this, don’t hesitate to reach out.
The Workshop Proposal form can be found here: https://forms.gle/VbDoG3317GphzRP46
This form is required and will prompt you for all the information we need in order to get your workshop on our website and open it for registration. Your workshop images can be emailed to: info@textilestudio.ca
You can decide how to structure your time but a 30 - 60 minute lunch break is usually offered mid-day.
Accessing the Studio
As most workshops run on the weekend, you will be accessing the studio on your own. We have a lockbox on the studio door with a key to the space and our Studio Coordinator will provide the code via email in preparation for your teaching day. If you’re teaching on a Sunday, when the building is closed, our Studio Coordinator can buzz you in on Sunday morning using the building intercom system - you can discuss when you will be arriving and plan accordingly.
In some cases, there will be a member who is interested in assisting a workshop in exchange for participation. This will be organized by our Studio Coordinator with your agreement. The member will then be present to provide access to the space.
You are responsible for leaving the studio as you found it and making sure the key is returned to the lockbox when you’re done locking up.
Our Studio Coordinator will be reachable on the day you’re teaching in case you need anything.
